Growing Procedure
WHEAT GRASS GROWING PROCEDURE
Soak 1 lb. seed for 8-12 hours in quart jar
Drain seed & rinse, removing as much water as possible,
let sit in jar
Rinse 2 more times 6-8 hours apart; you will start seeing sprouts
Prepare 17" X 17" flats with ½" of organic
top soil & sphagnum mixture (50/50)
(I do not recommend using soil mixture with fertilizers added
in!)
Spread sprouted seed evenly over dirt
Water until dripping
Cover with other sprouting trays with holes so to allow limited
light
Use grow light for sprouting
Turn off light at night
Mist every 4-5 hours each day
Remove cover trays when new shouts are 1"
Water each morning until dripping while covered
Continue to mist several times daily after uncovering
Do not let seeds dry out!
Harvest when split shoot appears or when 7-8" tall
I have fans going day & night with good air movement. Also
present is a dehumidifier.
Four challenges have presented themselves.
1) Mold
2) Dryness
3) Uneven growth
4) A portion of the seed not growing
Mold is a direct result of over watering. There is a fine line between over watering and not watering enough. You will need to experiment some here. I currently water in the morning until I uncover the seed. Then I mist for two days, 2/3 times a day. Once the wheatgrass is about 4 inches tall I water again in the morning.
Dryness I have repositioned the fans so they do not blow directly on the flats.
Uneven growth (each flat appearing very different from the other);
I am using grow lights with specs from our Hippocrates class;
two four footers per 4 flats.
